“Brothers and sisters, this evening, with the recitation of the Rosary, we invoke Mary, Health of the Sick, for the health of the Holy Father, Pope Francis.” With these poignant words, Cardinal Arthur Roche, Prefect of the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, led the prayer gathering on the evening of March 4. The intention was clear: to pray for the recovery of Pope Francis, who has been battling pneumonia at Rome’s Gemelli Polyclinic since February 14.
During this ninth gathering, the Cardinal emphasized the unique role of the Virgin Mary in the “mystery of the Cross,” where she stands as a beacon of hope for all who seek her intercession. Her maternal care and love provide solace to all who turn to her in times of need.
The image of “Mary, Mother of the Church” stood prominently before St. Peter’s Basilica, overseeing the prayer vigil. Cardinals, bishops, clergy, and faithful from the Roman Curia and the Diocese of Rome came together each evening to lift their prayers for Pope Francis’ recovery to the Virgin Mary.
After reflecting on the Sorrowful Mysteries and reciting the Salve Regina, Cardinal Roche invoked the Holy Spirit to strengthen the faith of the assembly and lead them towards a hopeful future. The gathering concluded with the singing of Oremus pro Pontifice nostro and the Cardinal’s blessing on all present.
Each evening of prayer serves as a powerful reminder of the unbreakable bond between the faithful and their spiritual leader, Pope Francis. In the words of Cardinal Roche, “Let us continue to entrust Pope Francis to the loving care of Mary, Health of the Sick, as we walk together in faith towards a brighter tomorrow.”
