Discover Italy’s Tribute to Michelangelo in Tuscany
Celebrate the 550th anniversary of the legendary High Renaissance artist Michelangelo with a series of special events and cultural initiatives, primarily taking place in his native Tuscany.
The festivities kick off in Florence, where the most important museum dedicated to Michelangelo is set to open, a collaboration between the Galleria dell’Accademia and the Bargello Museums, announced by Italy’s state museums director general Massimo Osanna.
Visitors can explore joint itineraries that include the Accademia and the Bargello, along with Michelangelo’s “Secret Room,” discovered beneath the Medici Chapels complex half a century ago.
As part of the program “The eternal contemporary. Michelangelo 1475-2025“, a series of talks, readings, and concerts will pay homage to the artist behind the iconic Sistine Chapel ceiling painting.
Michelangelo’s David, a towering marble masterpiece, is the star attraction at the Galleria dell’Accademia, alongside other sculptures like the “slaves” and the incomplete St Matthew.
The Bargello Museum also boasts four Michelangelo works including Bacchus, Madonna with Child, Brutus, and David-Apollo.
Activities will also take place in Caprese Michelangelo, at the Birthplace Museum of Michelangelo Buonarroti, where the artist was born in 1475.
Italy will issue a special commemorative stamp and a collector’s coin to honor Michelangelo’s unparalleled impact on Western art.
