The European Union Bishops’ Conferences Commission Stands in Solidarity with Ukraine
Amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the Presidency of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union released a powerful statement on March 4. The statement emphasized the crucial importance of supporting Ukraine and its people during these challenging times.
The European Union Bishops reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine, a country that has been enduring Russia’s unjustifiable invasion for over three years. The bishops emphasized that Ukraine’s struggle for peace is not just a local issue but one that impacts the fate of Europe and the entire world.
A Call for Unity and Support
The bishops expressed their deep concern for those affected by the conflict – the lives lost, the wounded, and the displaced. They also commended the EU decision-makers for their extensive support in humanitarian, political, economic, financial, and military aspects.
Recognizing the complexities of the situation, the bishops called upon the EU and its member states to remain united in their commitment to supporting Ukraine. They emphasized the need for a collective effort to ensure peace and stability in the region.
Pursuing Justice and Accountability
The Commission condemned Russia’s invasion as a blatant violation of international law and called for accountability for the atrocities committed against civilians. They stressed the importance of pursuing a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine through negotiations and global solidarity.
The bishops highlighted the significance of protecting the rights of all communities, including the Russian-speaking minority, in the reconstruction efforts. They urged Russia to actively participate in rebuilding Ukraine and emphasized the necessity of international cooperation in achieving peace.
A Vision for a Peaceful Future
The bishops encouraged the EU to expedite the process of adding Ukraine as a member state, emphasizing the EU’s role as a promoter of peace and stability in the region. They expressed hope that the European Union would continue to be a beacon of peace in the world.
As Christians around the world prepare for Lent, the bishops entrusted Ukraine and Europe to the care of Jesus and the intercession of Mary, the Queen of Peace. They emphasized the importance of solidarity, unity, and continued support for Ukraine in its quest for peace.
