CELEBRATING WOMEN’S DAY WITH CULTURAL EVENTS ACROSS THE CITY

Shows, meetings, screenings, exhibitions, guided tours, book presentations, awards, and activities for children. On Saturday, March 8th, various cultural venues across the city, from museums to libraries, theaters to cinemas, will host a rich program of events promoted by the Culture Department of Rome Capital and proposed by the Department of Cultural Activities, the Rome Library System, the Cinema Foundation for Rome, the Capitoline Superintendence of Cultural Heritage, and the Theaters in Common.

This widespread program is part of the initiatives organized by Rome Capital, “ALWAYS MARCH 8th”, inviting everyone to reflect on the female condition, our society, and the importance of the ongoing battles for women’s rights that have featured great women throughout history and continue to shape our daily lives.

“International Women’s Day is an opportunity to spread a policy in the city of Rome that supports and promotes a culture of affection, difference, equal opportunities, respect, and complexity. In particular, with the initiatives of this 2025, we want to emphasize the shift that is taking place, laboriously but irreversibly, in our society away from the patriarchal culture that has dominated it until now.

For this reason, the evening at the Ara Pacis Museum dedicated to Carla Lonzi is central to our initiatives. A radical feminist, a militant intellectual who marked a fundamental point in the struggles for women’s rights,” declares the Culture Councilor of Rome Capital, Massimiliano Smeriglio.

The texts and thoughts of one of the greatest figures of Italian feminism will resonate at 9:00 PM on the stage of the Auditorium of the Ara Pacis Museum, which will host one of the main events of this day, the show Us, the unexpected subject of the world. The words of Carla Lonzi. Written and performed by Lunetta Savino with the collaboration of Viola Lo Moro, a tribute to the work of one of the most authoritative figures in the cultural and feminist landscape of our country: Carla Lonzi. Author of fundamental works such as “Manifesto of Female Revolt”, “We Spit on Hegel”, “The Clitoral Woman and the Vaginal Woman”, and “Self-Portrait”, her philosophical and political reflections have decisively contributed to the formation of contemporary feminist thought.

Lunetta Savino will guide the audience through the most significant works of the Florentine writer, accompanied on stage by Viola Lo Moro, a poet and activist, creator of the “InQuiete” writers’ festival, who will contextualize Lonzi’s path within the social, political, and cultural reality of Italy in the 1970s.

The evening will begin with greetings from the Councilor for Productive Activities and Equal Opportunities, Monica Lucarelli, and the Culture Councilor, Massimiliano Smeriglio.

The event, promoted by the Culture Department, organized by the Department of Cultural Activities with the organizational support of Zètema Progetto Cultura, and in collaboration with the publishing house La Tartaruga, is free admission with mandatory reservation at 060608 (entrance at Via di Ripetta 190).

The stage continues with the initiatives scheduled in some venues of the Theaters in Common network.

At Villa Pamphilj Theater, at 11:30 AM, there is TINELLO – Theatrical Conversations, a space for meeting and discussion where the actress, singer, and author Monica Demuru dialogues with some protagonists of the contemporary artistic scene. A series of intimate conversations where visions and courage intertwine, through the stories of different generations of artists who are redefining the spaces of creativity. The guest of the morning will be Martina Badiluzzi, a director, author, and performer, winner of the “Biennale College Directors Under 30” competition of the Venice Biennale and author of original and refined theatrical research. The courage of women in history is celebrated, this time on the stage of Ostia Lido Theater. At 7:00 PM, the company Actors & Technicians presents The Shameless Courtesans. Women of the Italian Risorgimento, a show written and directed by Chiara Bonome, also on stage with Simone Balletti, Andrea Carpiceci, Chiara David, Elena Ferrantini, and Maria Lomurno. Through the stories of some women, a tribute to the commitment of women who during the Risorgimento contributed to the independence and unification of Italy alongside men.

At the Tor Bella Monaca Theater, at 9:00 PM, Nives is scheduled: from the novel by Sacha Naspini published by Edizioni E/O, a show by Accademia Mutamenti and Muta Imago, with Sara Donzelli and Sergio Sgrilli, for the dramaturgy of Riccardo Fazi and curated by Giorgio Zorcù. The story of a woman left alone after the sudden death of her husband, where two entire lives are laid bare, leading to a re-reading of distant events and old resentments, uncovering the abysses of lost loves and missed opportunities.

Once again, the initiatives proposed by the Capitoline Superintendence of Cultural Heritage on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

The Civic Museums will host a series of meetings and guided tours dedicated to the enhancement of female talent in art, culture, and history, and to the leading figures of the city’s cultural and social life, from ancient times to more recent times.

At the Museum of Rome at Palazzo Braschi, on March 7th and 8th, the exhibition Roma Pittrice. Artists at work between the 16th and 19th centuries will be exceptionally open to the public until 10:00 PM (last entry at 9:00 PM). And to tell the stories and talents of the artists featured in this exhibition, more or less known, active in the city between the 16th and 19th centuries, on March 8th at 6:20 PM, a guided tour (with LIS interpreter) titled Roma Pittrice will be conducted by Ilaria Miarelli Mariani, Director of the Civic Museums Directorate. An opportunity to delve into the themes of the exhibition dedicated to the rediscovery of talented artists who, like many in history, have been victims of historical “silence.”
