European Leaders Agree on Peace Plan for Ukraine
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that European leaders have come together to create a peace plan for Ukraine, which will be presented to the United States. This decision was made following a summit in London with 18 European leaders.
Starmer emphasized the need for increased defense spending in Europe to demonstrate to US President Donald Trump that the continent is capable of defending itself. He described Europe as being at a pivotal moment in its history and revealed plans for a “coalition of the willing” consisting of Britain, France, Ukraine, and other nations to develop a 4-point plan to end the war in Ukraine. This coalition also aims to engage the US in their efforts and advance the peace plan collectively.
French President Emmanuel Macron, prior to the summit, outlined details of the peace plan, which includes a one-month ceasefire for air and sea attacks, with the possibility of European troop deployment if a substantial peace agreement is achieved.
Concerns have been raised about the exclusion of Kyiv from peace talks, especially after a recent clash between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, President Trump, and Vice President JD Vance at the White House. The fear is that Trump may withdraw support for Ukraine and negotiate a peace plan directly with Russia.
In a show of solidarity with Ukraine, President Zelensky met with Britain’s King Charles at his residence in eastern England following the summit. Zelensky reiterated Ukraine’s stance on not giving up captured territory but expressed openness to signing a mineral deal with the US.
Meanwhile, Russia has declared that its military operation in Ukraine will continue until all objectives are met. The Kremlin criticized Zelensky for his diplomatic approach and claimed that the unity of the West was starting to fracture.
As the situation continues to evolve, it remains crucial for European leaders to work together towards a peaceful resolution in Ukraine, ensuring that the country’s interests are protected and supported on the global stage.
