The Salesian Congregation is currently holding its 29th General Chapter, a significant event where the successor of Cardinal Ángel Fernández Artime as rector major will be elected. The cardinal resigned from his position to take on new responsibilities in the Vatican Curia at the request of Pope Francis.
The General Chapter began on Feb. 16 in Turin, Italy, and is expected to conclude on April 12. Over 227 representatives from more than 14,000 Salesians in 136 countries are participating in this important assembly.
Typically held every six years, this year’s chapter was moved up by a year due to the appointment of Fernández Artime as cardinal in 2023 and his ordination in 2024.
In August 2024, the Spanish cardinal stepped down from his position as superior of the Salesians, with Don Stefano Martoglio taking over as vicar.
The theme of the General Chapter revolves around being “Passionate About Jesus Christ, Dedicated to Young People,” focusing on vocational life, collaboration with young individuals, and restructuring the congregation’s leadership.
The new rector major chosen will be the 11th successor of St. John Bosco and will lead a new general council.
This historic meeting is being held in Valdocco, the heart of Turin and where the congregation’s main house is situated, marking the very place where Don Bosco initiated his work with youth.
