For many Ukrainians, Poland and its people have become like family, with nearly three million refugees finding refuge in the country as they fled the Russian invasion. The most vulnerable, including women, children, and older individuals, were welcomed into Polish homes rather than refugee shelters.
From the very beginning, the Polish Church has been at the forefront of providing aid. Every parish in the country has mobilized support for those affected by the war in Ukraine. Organizations such as Caritas Polska, the Knights of Columbus, religious congregations, and various other groups have also played a crucial role in these relief efforts.
A History of Support
Reflecting on the origins of the conflict, Fr. Leszek Kryża TChr, director of the Team for Aid to the Church in the East, emphasized that the war in Ukraine did not start overnight. Years of tension and unrest culminated in the full-scale invasion by Russia, prompting a massive influx of refugees into Poland.
Fr. Leszek has been a frequent visitor to Ukraine, providing support on behalf of the Polish Bishops’ Conference. He recalled the stark changes in eastern Ukraine leading up to the conflict, underscoring the urgent need for assistance and solidarity.
Generosity Knows No Bounds
When asked about the extent of aid provided by Poles to Ukraine, Fr. Leszek highlighted the immense generosity of individuals and organizations. From basic necessities to essential supplies like roof tiles, the support extended to regions deeply affected by the conflict.
Over the years, countless stories of compassion and resilience have emerged from the ongoing crisis. Priests risking their lives to help displaced populations, nuns caring for traumatized children, and communities coming together to offer a lifeline to those in need.
Building Bridges of Solidarity
As the conflict rages on, the bond between Poland and Ukraine continues to strengthen. With millions of border crossings and a shared commitment to support those affected by the war, the two nations have stood in solidarity against adversity.
Through initiatives led by organizations like Caritas Poland, the Order of Malta, and the Knights of Columbus, tangible assistance has reached thousands of individuals in need. From family support programs to psychological aid and educational opportunities for Ukrainian children, the impact of these efforts is immeasurable.
A Marathon of Compassion
While the conflict in Ukraine may have begun as a sprint, the enduring commitment of the Polish people has turned it into a marathon of compassion. Initiatives like the Parish Aid Centre for Ukraine in Łomianki exemplify the unwavering dedication to supporting those affected by the war.
As the center continues to spearhead relief efforts, collaborating with international partners and local volunteers, the spirit of solidarity remains strong. With over 10,000 projects completed and ongoing support for communities in need, the Church in Poland’s mission of mercy continues to shine brightly.
