
Archbishop Gallagher Calls for End to War in Ukraine
Amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Vatican Secretary for Relations with States, has made a passionate plea for peace. In a recent address at the OSCE Permanent Council, Archbishop Gallagher urged all parties involved to prioritize dialogue, humanitarian aid, and a renewed commitment to achieving lasting peace in the region.
Three Years of Conflict
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine three years ago, the country has endured immense suffering and devastation. Archbishop Gallagher highlighted the toll the war has taken on innocent civilians, as well as the damage to critical infrastructure and the environment. He emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian assistance to alleviate the crisis faced by millions of Ukrainians.
A Call for Diplomacy
Quoting Pope Francis, Archbishop Gallagher reiterated that “war is always a defeat.” He reaffirmed the Holy See’s support for the OSCE as a key player in seeking a just and lasting resolution to the conflict. Archbishop Gallagher urged all parties to uphold international law and work towards restoring peace, security, and cooperation among nations.
50 Years of the Helsinki Final Act
As the world commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Helsinki Final Act, Archbishop Gallagher stressed the importance of diplomacy and cooperation in maintaining peace. He called on participating States to embrace the “spirit of Helsinki” and prioritize friendly relations, respectful dialogue, and cooperation as essential components of peace-building efforts.

In closing, Archbishop Gallagher echoed Pope Francis’ plea for an end to the violence in Ukraine and a renewed commitment to negotiation and dialogue. He urged all parties to work towards a just and lasting peace that will bring an end to the suffering and pave the way for a brighter future for the people of Ukraine.
