As the dust settles on Germany’s federal elections, leading representatives of Catholic and Protestant Churches in the country are expressing their hopes for a swift and responsible formation of government, while also voicing concerns about social cohesion.

In the wake of Sunday’s elections, Bishop Georg Bätzing, chairman of the German Bishops’ Conference, shared his initial reactions in an interview with Vatican News.
“The significant increase in voter turnout is a positive sign for our country, demonstrating a strong commitment to democracy,” Bishop Bätzing remarked. “I hope for a stable government that can efficiently address the pressing issues facing our nation.”
He emphasized the need for constructive cooperation among democratic forces in Germany, urging them to work together for the benefit of citizens by listening, understanding, and seeking fair solutions through compromise.
On foreign policy, Bishop Bätzing stressed the importance of Germany’s integration into a democratic Europe and the need to resist extremist forces that threaten unity and solidarity.
Preliminary Results and Reactions
According to preliminary results, the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union of Bavaria (CDU/CSU) secured a significant portion of the vote, followed by other parties. Bishop Kirsten Fehrs, Chair of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), called for a responsible and constructive approach to the election results, emphasizing the importance of social cohesion and mutual respect.
Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki of Cologne expressed hope for a new government that promotes unity, wisdom, and social cohesion, while Archbishop Udo Markus Bentz highlighted the need to combat extremist positions and defend democratic values.
