The Impact of War on Children in Ukraine: A Call to Action by UNICEF
Today, on the anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion in Ukraine on 24 February 2022, UNICEF has issued a stark warning about the devastating impact of the ongoing conflict on the country’s children. According to the latest data, child casualties in Ukraine have surged by 57% in 2024, with an average of 16 children killed or injured every week.
Since the beginning of the war, over 2,520 children have been killed or injured, with 669 fatalities and 1,854 injuries confirmed by the United Nations. However, the true figures are likely even higher, as many deaths go unreported. The toll on children’s mental health is also staggering, with one in five children losing a family member or friend since the conflict began.
In addition to the tragic loss of life, Ukraine is facing an education crisis, with over 1,600 schools and nearly 800 healthcare facilities damaged or destroyed. The birth rate has plummeted by 35%, and one-third of children have been forced to flee the country in the past three years.
UNICEF is working tirelessly to support the most vulnerable children in Ukraine, providing essential services such as clean water, healthcare, education, and mental health support. However, the organization emphasizes the urgent need for international assistance to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
As the world marks another year of conflict in Ukraine, it is vital that we come together to protect and support the innocent victims of war. The children of Ukraine deserve our attention, our compassion, and our action.
