Pope Francis Continues to Recover in Hospital
On Sunday morning, the Holy See Press Office provided an update on Pope Francis’ condition as he spends his ninth night in Rome’s Gemelli hospital battling double pneumonia. Despite the challenges, the Pope had a peaceful night.
The Press Office revealed that the Holy Father experienced an asthma-like respiratory crisis on Saturday morning, leading to the administration of high-flow oxygen. Additionally, blood tests showed thrombocytopenia and anemia, requiring blood transfusions. The Pope, although more fatigued, remains alert and spent the day in an armchair. The prognosis is still guarded.
During a press conference at the hospital on Friday, Dr. Sergio Alfieri and Dr. Luigi Carbone addressed the media, stating that the Pope is expected to remain hospitalized for at least another week. While not in immediate danger of death, he is also not completely out of danger.
Dr. Alfieri reassured the public that the Pope is not on a ventilator, but his breathing difficulties limit his movements. Despite this, Pope Francis maintains his sense of humor, joking with doctors and remaining engaged.
As the medical team monitors for potential complications, including the risk of sepsis, they remain hopeful for the Pope’s recovery. Dr. Alfieri expressed confidence that Pope Francis will eventually return to the Vatican, although his respiratory issues will still need ongoing attention.
