While Pope Francis continues his treatment at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, he took a moment to express his gratitude to the medical staff and address the upcoming third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in a prepared Angelus message.
“On my part, I am confidently continuing my hospitalization at the Gemelli Hospital, carrying on with the necessary treatment; and rest is also part of the therapy!” the pontiff said on Feb. 23.
The Holy Father thanked the doctors and health workers at the hospital for their dedication and attention during his stay.
Reports from the Vatican confirmed that the pope, following a respiratory crisis, still requires supplemental oxygen and received a blood transfusion for platelet deficiency associated with anemia.
Despite his health challenges, Pope Francis acknowledged the ordination of new permanent deacons at St. Peter’s Basilica, offering words of encouragement to them for their ministry in the Church.
Addressing global concerns, the pope marked the third anniversary of the war against Ukraine and expressed solidarity with the suffering Ukrainian people. He also called for prayers for victims of armed conflicts in various regions such as Palestine, Israel, the Middle East, Myanmar, Kivu, and Sudan.
Lastly, Pope Francis expressed his appreciation for the messages of support he has received, particularly the letters and drawings from children.
