The Vatican’s Focus: Pope’s Health, Recovery, and Return
Amidst rumors and speculation, the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, emphasizes that the only concerns at the moment are Pope Francis’ health, recovery, and return to the Vatican. In an interview with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Cardinal Parolin dismisses reports suggesting the Pope’s resignation.
Addressing Unverified Rumors
Cardinal Parolin acknowledges the presence of false news and speculation surrounding the Vatican but remains focused on the Pope’s well-being. He states, “All of this seems to me to be unfounded speculation. Right now, our focus is on the Holy Father’s health, his recovery, and his return to the Vatican—these are the only things that matter.”
Regarding the atmosphere surrounding the Vatican, Cardinal Parolin remarks, “I do not believe there is any particular movement in this regard, and so far, I have not heard anything of the sort.” He also mentions that the updates from Gemelli Hospital, where the Pope is currently hospitalized, are encouraging, and the Pope is recovering well.
No Pressure for Resignation
Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, echoes Cardinal Parolin’s sentiments in an interview with La Nación. He emphasizes that any decision regarding the Pope’s resignation must be completely free and voluntary. Cardinal Fernández states, “It makes no sense for some groups to exert pressure for a resignation.”
He reassures that there is no pre-conclave atmosphere and minimal discussion about a possible successor, emphasizing that the focus remains on the Pope’s recovery. Cardinal Fernández concludes, “What matters to me is that the Pope’s body has responded well to the current therapy.”
