Religious education made a triumphant return to Polish schools in 1990, marking a pivotal moment in the country’s journey towards democratization and normalization. The Act on the School Education System of 1991 mandated schools to offer religious instruction upon parental or student request, setting the stage for over three decades of religious education in Polish schools.
However, the public financing of religious education has faced persistent opposition over the years. Legal battles and debates surrounding the constitutionality of this funding have been ongoing, with various judicial bodies weighing in on the matter.
The political landscape shifted in December 2023 with the formation of a new coalition government led by Donald Tusk, signaling a new era in Polish governance. Minister of Education Barbara Nowacka, a proponent of secularization, spearheaded reforms aimed at reducing the presence of religion in schools and introducing new mandatory subjects like health education.
Minister Nowacka’s regulatory changes in 2024 and 2025, altering the organization and frequency of religious instruction, have sparked controversy and protests from religious authorities and parents alike. The ongoing conflict highlights not only the substance of the reforms but also the contentious process through which they were enacted.
