(Adnkronos) – The impact of words on individuals dealing with diabetes is profound. Comments like “what harm can a little treat do?” or “just looking at it gives me diabetes” can be hurtful. This was highlighted in a survey presented today in Rome, along with a video, by Abbott, who also unveiled an immersive installation in Piazza San Silvestro from February 20 to 23. The initiative ‘Above the Bias’ aims to help people see the world from the perspective of those living with diabetes and understand the complex challenges they face daily. The campaign is based on the efforts of numerous diabetes organizations, patient associations, and experts who work to reduce the stigma surrounding diabetes. Managing diabetes is a daily struggle for the approximately 4 million individuals in Italy living with the condition. The survey conducted in 8 countries worldwide, including Italy, revealed that preconceptions and stereotypes about diabetes could further complicate life and make managing the condition more challenging. Shame and stigma could have a significant impact on health, as almost 70% of respondents stated that diabetes stigma is a problem. Nearly 40% admitted to skipping medical appointments due to shame and stigma, while 85% encountered misinformation about diabetes in the media, TV shows, movies, and social media. Words can both hurt and heal, as supportive words can significantly increase motivation for 7 out of 10 individuals with diabetes to manage their condition. Abbott Diabetes Care’s Executive Vice President, Chris Scoggins, emphasized the importance of supporting those living with diabetes to overcome obstacles.
