Welcome to the Journey of the Magi
On February 19th, the Holy Father was scheduled to deliver a catechesis on “the visit of the Magi to the newborn King” at the general audience. However, due to his hospitalization at the Agostino Gemelli Hospital for bilateral pneumonia treatment, the text of the catechesis was released by the Press Office of the Holy See.
Today, we delve into the unique narrative of the Magi’s journey as prepared by Pope Francis for the general audience:

Dear brothers and sisters,
In Matthew’s Gospel, the story of the Magi unfolds—a tale exclusive to his narrative. Drawn by a celestial star, symbolizing the birth of a remarkable figure in many cultures, these wise men embark on a journey from the east, guided by faith rather than certainty of their destination. The Magi, outsiders to the covenant people, epitomize the unexpected recipients of divine revelation, echoing the theme of inclusivity in God’s plan.
Representing the diversity of humanity across races, continents, and life stages, the Magi embody a restless spirit, akin to the biblical figures of old, always seeking and moving forward. Their gaze is fixed on the heavens, transcending earthly boundaries.
As the star leads them to Jerusalem, they encounter King Herod, unwittingly setting the stage for a clash between innocence and cunning. Herod’s fear of losing power drives his deceptive agenda, contrasting with the simplicity and purity of the Magi’s quest.
The scribes, knowledgeable about the prophecy of Bethlehem as the birthplace of the Messiah, guide the Magi, underscoring the paradox of divine wisdom that confounds human expectations. The journey of the Magi is not just physical but spiritual, a transformative encounter with the divine.
With the reappearance of the star, the Magi find Jesus, experiencing a profound joy that resonates with the inner longing for God. Their adoration and gifts symbolize the universal embrace of salvation, transcending cultural and linguistic barriers.
Like the Magi, let us embark on a journey of hope, courageously seeking the presence of God in the midst of humility and kingship. May our lives reflect the beauty of faith and love as we offer our most precious gifts to the newborn King.
