Vivian Schwanke De Oliveira, a minister of the Anglican Episcopal Church of Brazil (IEAB), participated in the Sunday, Feb. 9, Mass for the installation of the archbishop of the Archdiocese of Chapecó in St. Anthony Cathedral.
The minister, dressed in a white alb and a blue stole, joined the priests and bishops in the entrance procession, actively took part in the consecration of the Eucharist, and received Communion.

Canon 908 of the Code of Canon Law prohibits Catholic priests from concelebrating the Eucharist with priests or ministers of churches not in full communion with the Catholic Church.
According to Canon 844, Catholic ministers can only administer sacraments to Catholic members and vice versa.
The Mass was presided over by Archbishop Odelir José Magri, MCCJ, who emphasized the ecumenical significance of having religious authorities present at the celebration.
Welcome to a momentous occasion in the Archdiocese of Chapecó, Brazil, where history was made as Archbishop Odelir Magri was appointed to lead the faithful in their spiritual journey. The ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, including the minister of the IEAB and the pastor of the Renovar em Cristo Church, adding to the sanctity of the event.
Father François Cristiano Cousseau, the chancellor of the archdiocese, solemnly read the Pope’s decree on the creation of the Archdiocese of Chapecó and Archbishop Magri’s appointment, setting the stage for a new chapter in the Church’s history.
In a touching moment, Archbishop Magri knelt before the altar, professing his faith and pledging his loyalty to the Catholic Church. Surrounded by priests and bishops, including Bishop Cleocir Bonetti and Archbishop Francisco Carlos Bach, Archbishop Magri took the oath of fidelity, vowing to uphold the Church’s teachings and promote ecclesiastical discipline.
The Anglican Episcopal Church of Brazil in Western Santa Catarina and Alto Uruguai Gaúcho also expressed their support for Archbishop Magri and the Archdiocese of Chapecó, emphasizing their commitment to unity in faith and service to others.
In response to queries about an Anglican minister’s participation in the Mass, Archbishop Magri assured that steps were being taken to address any inadvertent violations of liturgical norms, reaffirming the Church’s dedication to doctrinal and liturgical correctness.
As the Archdiocese of Chapecó embarks on this new chapter under Archbishop Magri’s leadership, we join in prayer for divine blessings on their evangelizing mission, as they continue to spread the message of faith and unity in Christ.
