Are we ready for the challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI)? Pope Francis’ adviser on AI, Father Paolo Benanti, raised concerns about the potential risks associated with unregulated use of this technology. He warned that it could lead to the creation of bioweapons and exacerbate income inequality.
Speaking at an event in Rome organized by the embassies of Australia and Italy, Father Benanti highlighted the ethical and human rights issues surrounding AI. The event followed the recent Artificial Intelligence Action Summit in Paris, where over 60 countries, including the Vatican, Italy, Australia, and China, signed an international pact to develop AI in an ethical, open, transparent, and safe manner. Notably, the U.S. did not sign the agreement.
Joining Father Benanti were four other panelists who discussed the diverse impacts of AI on global politics, the economy, law, and social interactions. These discussions took place in the context of an “AI revolution” that is reshaping our world.
