Restoring Hope in Mosul
In Iraq, a beacon of hope shines bright as the Dominican House of Prayer, previously known as the Dominican Sisters’ convent in Mosul, was unveiled after undergoing a meticulous restoration process. Located near the Church of Our Lady of the Hour, this historic site has been revived thanks to the efforts of UNESCO and the Aliph Foundation. This project, initiated by French President Emmanuel Macron, aims to rebuild the cultural heritage of Mosul, which suffered significant destruction during the conflict with ISIS. With a budget of around $1.5 million, the restoration work was completed between April 2023 and April 2024, symbolizing a new chapter of resilience and renewal in the region.
Celebrating Tradition in Armenia
Armenians recently marked the festival of Trndez, a cherished celebration that blends Christian customs with ancient pagan rituals. This festival is observed in both the Apostolic and Catholic Churches, symbolizing the burning of the old year and the welcoming of new beginnings. Couples leap over embers during this event, symbolizing a year filled with prosperity and fertility. The vibrant traditions of Trndez showcase the rich cultural tapestry of Armenia and the enduring spirit of its people.
A New Shepherd in Ethiopia
In a joyous ceremony, Bishop Gobezayehu Getachew Yilma was ordained as the bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Hawassa in southern Ethiopia. The ordination took place at Kidane Mihret Cathedral in Hawassa, amidst a grand procession through the city streets. This long-awaited appointment brought immense joy to the faithful, who had been without a bishop for five years. Prior to his elevation, Bishop Yilma served diligently as a priest in the Diocese of Meki, holding various roles including youth coordinator, vicar delegate, and director of Caritas Meki. His new role as bishop heralds a new chapter of spiritual guidance and pastoral care for the Catholic community in Hawassa.
