As the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) gains momentum in the polls leading up to the snap elections on February 23, German Christian Church leaders have come together to issue a powerful appeal emphasizing the crucial need to defend democracy.
Democracy is Non-Negotiable
Signed by Bishop Georg Bätzing, Bishop Kirsten Fehrs, and Archpriest Radu Constantin Miron, the joint statement emphasizes that democracy is a fundamental value that must be protected at all costs.
The leaders denounce extremism and ethnic nationalism, asserting that these ideologies are incompatible with Christian values and threaten the foundation of democracy.
The Munich Attack and Campaign Polarization
Against the backdrop of escalating polarization fueled by misinformation and a recent attack in Munich involving an Afghan asylum seeker, the Church leaders urge for unity and understanding in the face of divisive rhetoric.
The incident has further stirred the election campaign, with calls for stricter immigration policies from some parties as the far-right gains support.
Fostering Hope Amid Uncertainty
In a time of global turmoil and uncertainty, the Church leaders stress the importance of hope and confidence in the future, highlighting the need for democratic responses to pressing challenges such as climate change, forced migration, and technological advancements.
They caution against authoritarianism and misinformation, urging Germany to continue strengthening its commitment to human rights, environmental protection, and global peace.
Upholding European Values
The appeal emphasizes the importance of upholding the values on which Europe was built after WWII, including social justice, economic equality, and the dignity of all individuals.
The leaders call on voters to support parties and candidates dedicated to a free, inclusive society that champions solidarity and environmental protection.
Defend Our Democracy
In their closing remarks, the Church leaders make a direct plea to voters to uphold democracy and choose candidates who prioritize the common good and the values enshrined in the Basic Law.
They urge all German citizens to defend democracy and work towards a society based on mutual understanding, fairness, and respect for all.
