In a time where trust in institutions is diminishing and divisions are deepening, the Church has embraced the power of authentic listening. Through initiatives like the recent Synod Assembly, the Church has opened itself up to discussions of hope and life, even when faced with challenging conversations that may cause wounds.
The webinar, held on February 12, was a collaborative effort between various organizations including NetOne, the General Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops, the Dicastery for Communication, and others. It followed a previous discussion on “What Kind of Communication for Synodality?” on March 7, 2024.
Speakers at the event included Alessandro Gisotti, Kim Daniels, and Erica Tossani, who shared insights on the importance of communication, action, and community in spreading hope and synodality.
Stories of Hope and Synodality
The webinar emphasized the significance of communication in merging hope and the synodal journey. Mr. Gisotti highlighted the importance of a communication style that engages with the world’s realities, especially those on the margins. He stressed the enduring values of journalism such as truth, honesty, and responsibility.
Ms. Daniels reflected on the Church’s mission in digital spaces, emphasizing the need for a truly synodal Church that listens, accompanies, and deepens relationships with God and others. She highlighted the importance of storytelling in sharing the Church’s narrative with the world.
Ms. Tossani underscored the need for words that inspire hope and life, calling for a communication style rooted in listening and authentic human experiences. She urged for a shift away from divisive arguments towards meaningful dialogue and shared projects.
Embracing Authentic Communication
The event featured readings from Pope Francis’ encyclical Dilexit Nos and reflections on the modern world by Chiara Lubich. Participants discussed the challenges of overcoming a “culture of silence” and the importance of forging lasting connections with those who suffer.
As communicators of hope, the webinar attendees were reminded of the necessity to not just stay connected but to truly be united in their efforts to share stories of hope and build community.
Ultimately, “CommunicAction for Building Community” served as a platform for meaningful discussions on the power of communication, action, and community in spreading hope and synodality in a world that craves stories of light amidst darkness.
