Ever since Pope Francis inaugurated the 2025 Jubilee year, a staggering 1.3 million individuals have crossed the threshold of the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. Archbishop Rino Fisichella, pro-prefect for the New Evangelization section of the Dicastery for Evangelization, shared this remarkable statistic during a press conference on February 7th for the Jubilee of the Armed Forces.
However, Archbishop Fisichella emphasized that the sheer number of pilgrims is not the sole measure of the Jubilee’s success. He stated, “What counts is what is in the hearts of people.”
While Holy Doors are traditionally designated in the four papal basilicas in Rome, this year Pope Francis added another location at Rebibbia prison in Rome.
Various factors have contributed to the surge in visitors to Rome and other parts of Italy to partake in this year’s festivities. According to Teresa Tomeo, a veteran anchor of the EWTN Radio show Catholic Connection and an Italy travel expert, the Jubilee is a significant draw for tourists. Additionally, recent surveys indicate that Italy continues to be a popular travel destination globally.
Tomeo explained, “Travelers are seeking more than just a vacation; they desire ‘transformative’ experiences. Italy, with its rich religious sites and natural beauty, provides the perfect setting for personal growth and change.”
