Message of the Holy Father
Missionaries of Hope Among all Peoples
Dear brothers and sisters!
As we approach World Mission Day in the Jubilee Year 2025, with a focus on hope, I have chosen the motto: “Missionaries of Hope Among all Peoples”. This theme emphasizes our essential calling as Christians to be messengers and builders of hope in the image of Christ. It is my prayer that this period will be a time of grace, as we reflect on the hope we have in the risen Christ, who offers us a living hope (1 Pet 1:3-4).
In the following sections, I will discuss some key aspects of our Christian missionary identity, urging us to be guided by the Spirit of God and to be filled with a holy zeal for spreading hope in a world overshadowed by darkness (Fratelli Tutti, 9-55).
1. In the footsteps of Christ our hope
Christ, the center of history, offers us hope that transcends time and space. He lived among us, healing the afflicted and restoring hope to the needy. Through his disciples, Jesus continues to minister hope to humanity, especially to those who are in despair or oppressed. The Church, as the community of Christ’s followers, carries on this mission of hope, offering itself for the well-being of all nations. Despite challenges and imperfections, the Church remains steadfast in its mission to bring hope to a broken world.
Let us be inspired to follow in the footsteps of Jesus, becoming bearers of hope in every corner of the earth!
2. Christians, bearers and builders of hope among all peoples
As Christians, we are called to share the Good News and to bring hope to those we encounter. Our joys, sorrows, and struggles are intertwined with those of our fellow human beings, especially the marginalized. This solidarity with others reflects the essence of Christian communities throughout history. Missionaries, who bring the love of God to different nations, exemplify this universal vocation of all baptized individuals to spread hope and bear witness to Christ’s message.
Our hope in Christ extends beyond earthly concerns, pointing us to the divine realities that await us. As we offer salvation in Christ to the world, we become agents of hope, guiding others towards the eternal promise of the Lord.
Embracing Hope and Renewing Mission
As Christians, our ultimate goal is not just to exist within limits, but to transcend them and find fulfillment in communion with the Absolute, which is God. This salvation is both transcendent and eschatological, beginning in this life and reaching its fullness in eternity (Evangelii Nuntiandi, 27).
With this great hope in mind, Christian communities can become beacons of a new humanity in a world grappling with a human crisis. In technologically advanced societies, we see a growing sense of bewilderment, loneliness, and indifference towards the elderly and those in need. The Gospel, lived out in community, has the power to restore us to a healthy, whole, and redeemed humanity.
We are called to carry out works of mercy, especially towards the marginalized and vulnerable, in a way that reflects God’s compassion and tenderness. By engaging with others personally, we can share the hope we have received and bring comfort to those in need.
Renewing the mission of hope
Today, as disciples of Christ, we are called to be artisans of hope in a world marked by distraction and unhappiness. Through the Easter spirituality we experience in the liturgical celebrations, especially during the Easter Triduum, we are reminded of our baptism into the redemptive death and resurrection of Christ. This empowers us to be a people of hope, sharing the message that death and hate are not the final word.
Missionaries of hope are grounded in prayer, drawing strength from God through faithful communication. Prayer is not only a missionary activity but also the foundation of hope. By renewing our mission of hope through prayer, especially through the Psalms, we keep the flame of hope alive within us.
Evangelization is a communal effort, rooted in Christian hope. It is an ongoing process that requires the building up of Christian communities through prayer and action. Let us actively participate in the Church’s evangelizing mission, following the example of Mary, Mother of Jesus Christ our hope.
