The Global Fight Against Human Trafficking: Talitha Kum Leading the Way

Join us in marking the 11th International Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Human Trafficking on Saturday, 8 February 2025. At the forefront of this crucial fight is Talitha Kum, a Catholic network of dedicated religious sisters committed to combating human trafficking through prevention, advocacy, and survivor support.

Under the leadership of Sr. Abby Avelino, Talitha Kum unites over 6,000 members globally. Their tireless efforts span across continents, raising awareness, rescuing victims, and engaging with policymakers to dismantle trafficker networks and ensure justice for survivors. In a recent discussion in Rome, Sr. Abby emphasized the importance of global solidarity in addressing this hidden crime:
“This year’s campaign theme, ‘Ambassadors of Hope, Together Against Human Trafficking,’ aligns with the Jubilee Year’s call to be Pilgrims of Hope. It reminds us that we are all called to bring hope to victims and survivors, especially women, children, and vulnerable young people,” she stated.
Sr. Abby also highlighted the evolving tactics of traffickers, making the crime more challenging to detect. “Human trafficking remains a hidden crime, with traffickers becoming increasingly elusive. This emphasizes the importance of awareness campaigns, education, and collaboration with governments and organizations,” she emphasized.
Empowering Survivors
Pauline Akinyu Juma, a youth ambassador for Talitha Kum and founder of the Kenyan organization Rebirth of a Queen, shares her firsthand experience of the horrors of trafficking. Her organization empowers survivors of sexual violence and human trafficking, offering economic opportunities and a platform to share their stories.
Despite facing challenges in securing resources, Pauline remains hopeful, stating, “Being part of Talitha Kum and working on a global strategy gives us strength and hope.”
Advocacy from Around the World
Mario, a legal activist from Romania, collaborates with various professionals to ensure justice for trafficking survivors. He emphasized the need for a more victim-centered legal system, aiming to provide dignity and understanding to victims.
Nana, a Mexican youth ambassador involved in prevention efforts in Japan, focuses on education and advocacy to raise awareness and prevent individuals from falling into trafficking traps.
Take Action Today
As we approach the International Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Human Trafficking, Talitha Kum calls on individuals and institutions to move beyond words and take concrete action. Join us in building a network of action, support, and advocacy to combat this heinous crime.
Let’s heed Pauline’s call to action: “We young people have the time and energy to make a difference. Let’s go beyond awareness and work together to create a better future for all.”
Sr. Abby echoes this sentiment, urging unity in the fight against trafficking. “Regardless of our faith or background, we must uphold human dignity and serve as ambassadors of hope.”
