The Visitation and the Magnificat
Dear brothers and sisters, good morning!
Today, let’s delve into the profound beauty of Jesus Christ, our hope, through the mystery of the Visitation. It is a moment when the Virgin Mary visits her relative, Saint Elizabeth, but it is also a time when Jesus, still in His mother’s womb, visits His people, as expressed in Zechariah’s hymn of praise (Lk 1:68).
After the Angel’s announcement, Mary, filled with wonder, embarks on a journey, reflecting the biblical call to respond to God with unlimited readiness. She bravely steps out into the world, unafraid of dangers or judgments, to reach out to others.
When we feel loved, we are moved to act, just as the love of Christ compels us (2Cor 5:14). Mary, sensing this love, rushes to help Elizabeth, an elderly woman experiencing a miraculous pregnancy in her old age. Mary’s visit is not just to assist her relative but to share her faith and hope in God’s promises.
The encounter between these two women leads to a profound moment where Mary’s greeting triggers a prophecy in Elizabeth’s child. This culminates in a blessing for both women, emphasizing the importance of belief in God’s promises.
In response to the revelation of her Son’s identity, Mary offers a prayer of praise, the Magnificat, which resounds with faith, hope, and joy. This hymn of redemption reflects on God’s past actions, illuminating the present with faith and the future with hope.
The Magnificat serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness throughout history, from Abraham to Jesus Christ. It portrays Mary as a microcosm of the people of God, fully adhering to the covenant, and heralds the salvation brought by Jesus, the fulfillment of God’s promises.
Let us seek the grace to patiently await the fulfillment of God’s promises and welcome Mary’s presence in our lives. May we, like her, conceive and bear the Word of God through our faith and hope.
