The superior general of the Society of Jesus, Venezuelan priest Arturo Sosa, has called for a meeting of all Jesuit major superiors in Rome this October. The meeting will cover topics such as their life and mission, the vow of poverty, sexual abuse within their communities, and the role of women in their apostolate.
This will mark the third time that Jesuit major superiors will convene, following meetings in 2000 and 2005. The event, scheduled for Oct. 17–26, will take place during the 2025 Jubilee Year of Hope.
In a letter dated Jan. 16, Sosa emphasized that the October meeting is a crucial part of the discernment process inspired by the 36th General Congregation. The Jesuits are called to respond boldly to the signs of the Holy Spirit guiding them in serving the mission entrusted to them by the Church.
Sosa also highlighted the importance of examining the vow of poverty, revising the Statutes on Religious Poverty of the Society of Jesus, and addressing issues related to administration and finance within the organization.
Regarding the issue of abuse, Sosa acknowledged the challenges of recognizing and addressing abuse within Jesuit communities and apostolic works. He commended the steps taken to acknowledge cases, implement measures, and facilitate processes of justice and reconciliation.
