Sister Justina Adejo, a member of the Augustinian Sisters of the Mercy of Jesus, reflects on the transformative impact of embracing the spirit of synodality in the education and formation of schoolgirls at the congregation-owned boarding secondary school.
“By actively listening to the girls, we create a space for genuine interaction and communication. This approach fosters a sense of trust and openness, allowing the girls to share their life experiences with us,” she shared with Vatican News.
As the Principal of Mother of Good Counsel Girl’s Secondary School established in 2011, Sister Adejo emphasized how this synodal approach has guided the girls towards moral uprightness, self-reliance, and discipline in achieving their life goals.
Cultivating Synodality with Purpose
Ensuring the sustainability of this synodal culture within the school, Sr. Adejo highlighted the importance of creating a supportive system that encourages students to share their personal journeys.
“We make ourselves available to the girls at all times, fostering an environment where they feel comfortable to express themselves. Our guidance and counseling system provides a safe space for them to seek support and guidance,” she explained.
Regular meetings among teachers further enhance communication and understanding, creating a conducive environment for growth and learning.
Mission of Education
Linking the school’s educational mission with the core values of the Augustinian Sisters of the Mercy of Jesus, Sister Adejo emphasized the integral role of education in guiding young girls towards a closer relationship with Christ.
“Our work at the school aligns with our mission as Augustinian sisters, as we strive to bring Christ to the girls and lead them towards a deeper spiritual connection,” she expressed.
Synodality in Community
Embracing synodality extends beyond the school walls into the community life of the Augustinian Sisters, fostering a culture of listening, sharing, and unity.
“Synodality encourages us to listen to each other and share our experiences, strengthening our bond as sisters. Through communal prayer and reflection, we find common ground and support each other in our spiritual journey,” Sr. Adejo shared.
Embracing Silent Prayer for Service
Quoting Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Sr. Adejo highlighted the profound impact of silent prayer on fostering faith, love, and service within the community.
“Our synodal life enables us to share our faith and teachings with others, as we embody the spirit of service and peace through our actions,” she reflected.
Through the practice of synodality, the Augustinian Sisters of the Mercy of Jesus continue to inspire and guide young girls towards a path of spiritual growth, empowerment, and service to others.
