Pope Francis recently delivered a powerful message to consecrated men and women, encouraging them to be the “bearers of light” in today’s world through their faithful practice of the evangelical counsels. This call to action took place during the celebration of First Vespers for the World Day for Consecrated Life at St. Peter’s Basilica.
Addressing a large gathering of religious individuals, the pope emphasized how poverty, chastity, and obedience have the potential to positively impact society through the love of God. He drew inspiration from the biblical verse “See… I have come to do your will, O God” (Heb 10:7).
This year’s World Day for Consecrated Life, celebrated annually on Feb. 2, holds special significance as the Church looks forward to the Jubilee of Consecrated Life scheduled for October 2025. The event coincides with the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord and is symbolized by light.
In his homily, Pope Francis highlighted how evangelical poverty can free religious individuals from worldly attachments, allowing them to be a source of blessing to others through simplicity, generosity, sharing, and solidarity. He cautioned against the pitfalls of selfishness, greed, dependence, and misuse of material possessions.
During the evening prayer service, Pope Francis expressed the joy of encountering religious individuals who exhibit mature and joyful relationality. He likened consecrated persons to a “Bride before her Spouse,” emphasizing the beauty of their commitment and dedication.
