Welcome to an exclusive interview with Patricia Scotland, the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, discussing the prestigious 2025 Zayed Prize for Human Fraternity. By Joseph Tulloch – Abu Dhabi
Each year, the Zayed Prize for Human Fraternity celebrates individuals or groups worldwide who dedicate themselves to fostering genuine human connections and bridging divides selflessly and tirelessly.
Established in 2019, the prize follows the historic signing of the Document on Human Fraternity by Pope Francis and Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyeb, the Grand Imam of Al Azhar.
The upcoming award ceremony on Tuesday, 4th February, coinciding with the UN-recognized International Day of Human Fraternity, will take place in Abu Dhabi. The distinguished winners have been carefully chosen by an independent jury, including the esteemed Patricia Scotland, the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations.
Scotland shared her insights with Vatican News during a press conference in Abu Dhabi, shedding light on the selection process and the significance of the prize.
Q: You’re part of the jury for the Zayed Prize. Tell me a bit about that – how did the selection process go?
Scotland expressed her deep honor at being part of the judging panel, representing the diverse Commonwealth nations and their shared values that mirror the essence of the Zayed Award. The meticulous selection process spanned several months, involving a thorough review of numerous applications to identify exemplary individuals who embody values of human fraternity, equality, and inclusivity.
The Vatican is also involved in the Zayed Prize, and Cardinal Peter Turkson is a jury member this year. You’re a Catholic yourself – what role did your faith play in all this?
Scotland emphasized the pivotal role of faith, particularly in the context of Pope Francis and the Grand Imam’s joint efforts to promote love, understanding, and respect transcending mere tolerance. As a Catholic, Scotland highlighted the belief in every individual’s divine essence, underscoring the sanctity of life and the imperative to preserve it. The essence of human fraternity resonates deeply with the core teachings of love and unity espoused by the Pope.
Speaking of the Pope – you met with him recently, I believe. How did that go? What did you talk about?
Scotland fondly recalled a recent meeting with Pope Francis, where they discussed the award and shared warm wishes on his birthday. The encounter was a reaffirming moment to absorb the Pope’s wisdom and reaffirm commitment to promoting love and unity across all faiths and backgrounds.
