Welcome to the vibrant Catholic community in Northern Nigeria, where faith and culture intertwine to create a rich tapestry of spirituality and tradition. Since the historic elevation of Kaduna Diocese to an Archdiocese in 1959, the Catholic Church in the region has flourished, now encompassing millions of devoted Catholics across 24 dioceses nestled within three ecclesiastical provinces.
The recent three-day gathering in Jos, the picturesque capital of Plateau State, served as a beacon of unity and collaboration among Bishops and representatives from the three ecclesiastical provinces. This annual meeting fosters a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose among the Church leaders, as they come together to exchange ideas, offer mutual support, and address common challenges.
Celebrating Unity in Diversity
Archbishop Matthew Ndagoso of Kaduna Ecclesiastical Province emphasized the significance of this gathering, highlighting the shared cultural, social, and political bonds that unite the Bishops of Jos, Abuja, and Kaduna provinces. This unity in diversity serves as a powerful force for positive change and progress within the Catholic community in northern Nigeria.
Fostering Partnerships for Progress
During the event, the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, underscored the pivotal role of the Church in driving socio-economic development within the region. He called for enhanced collaboration between the State and the Church, recognizing the invaluable contributions of the Church in areas such as healthcare, education, and agriculture.
Addressing Challenges with Resilience
Despite facing longstanding challenges such as insecurity, Archbishop Mathew Audu of Jos Ecclesiastical Province urged governments to prioritize the protection of lives and properties. The ongoing threats of insurgency and violence have posed significant obstacles to farmers and communities, underscoring the urgent need for sustained security measures.
Cultivating Hope in Times of Adversity
As the universal Church commemorates the Jubilee of Hope, Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama of Abuja encouraged the faithful to remain steadfast in their faith and resilient in the face of adversity. Embracing hope as a guiding light, he reminded believers that with faith and perseverance, brighter days are on the horizon.
