Franciscan Father Francesco Patton’s unexpected journey as the custos of the Holy Land began in 2016, leading him to a land he was largely unfamiliar with. Despite his initial apprehension, Father Patton embraced the challenge, immersing himself in the unique role.
As he nears the end of his second term, Father Patton reflected on his experiences, challenges, and key moments in this significant position. He highlighted the importance of listening and studying to navigate his new reality, with the support of fellow friars and collaborators like Shibli, his driver, who became a close friend.
The Custody of the Holy Land, entrusted to the Franciscans by Pope Clement VI over 700 years ago, holds a unique position as the official guardian of Christian holy sites. Father Patton’s role extends beyond leading a community of friars to being a point of reference for politicians, diplomats, and local authorities due to the Custody’s deep roots in the region.
Unlike other provincial ministers who are elected by their friars, the custos is selected by the General Definitorium and approved by the Holy See, underscoring the significance of this role within the Franciscan order.
