Communication is about giving a part of ourselves to others, said Pope Francis in a spontaneous address at the Vatican’s Jubilee of Communication.
Setting aside his prepared remarks, the pope held up a nine-page speech and decided to speak briefly to the audience gathered at the Vatican’s Paul VI Hall, acknowledging that they were hungry.
He emphasized the importance of knowing how to communicate and praised the work of communicators in building society and the Church, urging journalists to be truthful and authentic in their work and personal lives.
The pope’s interaction with communicators was part of a series of jubilee audiences in 2025, following an earlier meeting with pilgrims.
The event kicked off with a dialogue between Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Ressa, author Colum McCann, and veteran Italian journalist Mario Calabresi.

The pope’s prepared message, later shared with participants, addressed various challenges in modern communications.
