Pope Francis expressed his gratitude to the mediators who facilitated the latest ceasefire deal in Gaza, which came into effect on Jan. 19.
After leading the Angelus prayer with a crowd of pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square, the Holy Father acknowledged the ceasefire as a significant achievement for the city that had been embroiled in conflict for over a year since Israel initiated war against Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023.
“In recent days, it was announced that the ceasefire in Gaza would take effect today. I extend my thanks to all the mediators. Mediation plays a crucial role in achieving peace. Thank you to the mediators!” exclaimed the pope on Sunday.
“I hope that the agreed terms will be honored promptly by all parties involved,” he added.
During his Angelus address, Pope Francis also expressed his hope for the safe return of all hostages to their families and advocated for the opening of humanitarian corridors into Gaza.
“I pray fervently for them and their loved ones,” he shared with his audience on Sunday.
