Pope Francis expressed his disapproval of potential mass deportations in the United States under President-elect Donald Trump during an extensive Italian television interview on Sunday.
“If this is true, it is a disgrace because it unfairly burdens the poor and vulnerable who have nothing to do with the imbalance. This is not the way to solve problems,” the pope stated on Italian broadcaster Nove’s “Che tempo che fa” program on Jan. 19, addressing plans to deport undocumented immigrants in the U.S.
The U.S. bishops had stated in November that they would strongly oppose any proposal from President Trump that undermines human dignity.
According to July 2023 statistics from the Center for Migration Studies, there are approximately 11.7 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S.
