Pope Francis on Sunday expressed his gratitude towards the mediators who successfully negotiated a cease-fire deal in Gaza, which came into effect on Jan. 19.
Addressing the crowds gathered in St. Peter’s Square after the Angelus prayer, the Holy Father acknowledged the significance of the cease-fire for the war-torn city, which has been embroiled in conflict since Israel’s declaration of war on Hamas in October 2023.
“In recent days, news of the cease-fire in Gaza becoming effective today was announced. I extend my thanks to all the mediators. It is commendable work to mediate for peace. Thank you to the mediators!” exclaimed Pope Francis.
“I hope that the agreed terms will be promptly honored by all parties,” he added.
During his Angelus address, Pope Francis also offered prayers for the safe return of all hostages to their families and called for the establishment of humanitarian corridors into Gaza.
“I pray fervently for them and their families,” he shared with the audience on Sunday.
