Experiencing God’s Abundance: Pope Francis Reflects on the Wedding at Cana
During his Sunday Angelus address, Pope Francis reflected on the Lord’s first sign at the Wedding at Cana, emphasizing that when humanity faces lack, the Lord responds with abundance because He desires to celebrate with us.
In the Gospel according to St. John, Jesus performs his first “sign” by turning water into wine at the Wedding at Cana, responding to his mother’s request. Pope Francis noted how this event anticipates the entire mission of Jesus, symbolizing the renewal of the nuptial covenant between God and humanity.
The Pope highlighted the contrast between lack and superabundance in this episode. While the wine runs out at the wedding, Jesus intervenes by filling six large jars with an abundance of exquisite wine, demonstrating God’s overflowing love for humanity. This abundance signifies the beginning of God’s feast with humanity.
Even in the banquets of our own lives, Pope Francis pointed out that there are times when we feel lacking in joy, hope, and vitality due to worries, fears, or evil forces. However, he reassured the faithful that the Lord always responds to our needs with the superabundance of His love, pouring out the wine of the Holy Spirit to bring joy and hope into our lives.
Although it may seem paradoxical, Pope Francis explained that the more we lack, the more abundantly the Lord blesses us because He wants to celebrate with us. He encouraged the faithful to pray to the Virgin Mary for intercession and to rediscover the joy of encountering the Lord Jesus during this Jubilee Year.
