Exciting news from Rome! With millions of pilgrims expected for the upcoming jubilee year, Pope Francis took the time to praise the dedicated service of the Swiss Guard and show support for their families during a recent audience.
During the audience marking the 25th anniversary of the Pontifical Swiss Guard Foundation, the pope emphasized the invaluable role the guards play in managing the influx of pilgrims and ensuring the safety of the pontiff.
“The work of the Swiss Guard has evolved over time, but their commitment to protecting the pope has remained unwavering,” Francis remarked. “Their patience and dedication in welcoming pilgrims from across the globe is truly commendable.”
Established during the Great Jubilee of 2000, the foundation provides essential support to guard families, especially in the areas of education and professional development.
“I admire the guards for their commitment to marriage and family life,” the pope added, acknowledging the increasing number of married guards with children. “This sense of family is crucial and should be celebrated.”
Aside from family assistance, the foundation also focuses on ensuring the guards’ readiness through training initiatives and equipment upgrades. It also maintains connections with former guards who have completed their Vatican service.
“I maintain close relationships with some of these former guards who continue to hold the Vatican and the Church close to their hearts,” Francis shared. “Their occasional calls, gifts, and visits when passing through Rome mean a lot to me.”
