During the audience celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Council of the Foundation of the Pontifical Swiss Guard, Pope Francis emphasized the importance of mutual support within the Church community.
The Foundation, established in Switzerland in 2000, was created to provide assistance to the Swiss Guards in their mission to safeguard the Pope and the Vatican for generations to come.
Founded in 1506 by Pope Julius II, the Pontifical Swiss Guard is one of the oldest military units still in operation today. Despite evolving over the centuries, their core duty of protecting the Pope remains unchanged.
Pope Francis commended the Guards for their patience and dedication, especially in their role of welcoming and assisting the millions of pilgrims who visit the Vatican annually.
Supporting Guard Families
The Pope also acknowledged the Foundation’s vital role in supporting the families of the Swiss Guards, providing financial aid for their children’s education and ensuring their well-being.
He expressed his delight in seeing Guardsmen start families of their own, emphasizing the importance of family values within the Church and society.
Additionally, the Foundation aids in providing ongoing training for the Guards and maintaining their equipment, ensuring they are well-prepared for their duties.
Pope Francis expressed his gratitude for the Foundation’s assistance in helping Guardsmen transition back to civilian life after their service at the Vatican, fostering a lasting connection with the Church.
Unity in Service
In closing, Pope Francis highlighted the interconnectedness of all Church entities and the need for collaboration in fulfilling their common mission for the greater good of the Church.
He concluded by expressing heartfelt appreciation for the Foundation’s generous support over the past twenty-five years, thanking them for their dedication to the Pontifical Swiss Guard. “Thank you, thank you very much!”
