A Historic Ceasefire in Gaza
After 15 months of conflict, a historic ceasefire was announced between Hamas and Israel. The agreement, set to begin on Sunday, also includes the release of 33 hostages in exchange for nearly 1,000 Palestinian prisoners. The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem expressed its relief and hope that this ceasefire will bring an end to the immense suffering in the region. The Patriarchate also called for addressing the root causes of the conflict and welcomed the possibility of pilgrims returning to the Holy Land.
Lebanon Welcomes New Leadership
Lebanon has ushered in a new era with the appointment of Joseph Aoun as President of the Republic and Nawaf Salam as Prime Minister. Aoun, a Maronite Catholic and former head of the Lebanese army, brings his military expertise to the presidency, while Salam, a Sunni Muslim and seasoned diplomat, takes on the role of Prime Minister. After a two-year executive power vacuum, Lebanon is hopeful for political stability, with the formation of a new government expected soon.
Consecration of the Church of the Baptism of the Lord in Jordan
On January 10th, a momentous occasion took place in Jordan as the Church of the Baptism of the Lord was consecrated at the site of Al-Maghtas, where Jesus was believed to have been baptized by Saint John the Baptist. The inauguration marked the culmination of 15 years of hard work and dedication. The Mass was led by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, joined by Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa and a congregation of faithful followers. Jordan, known for its ancient Christian community, currently hosts a Christian population of 2-4% of its 11 million inhabitants.
