Welcome to the insightful commentary by Fr. Jorge Miró on the Gospel for this Sunday, January 19, 2025, titled “Do whatever He tells you.”
***
As we transition from the Christmas season to the ordinary time of the liturgical year, we are called to embark on a journey of holiness, a path of faith and friendship with Jesus, our Master and Lord. The upcoming Sundays before Lent will reveal that being a Christian is not about moralism, but about following Jesus. These initial weeks will focus on the fundamental attitudes of a disciple, preparing us to receive and internalize the teachings of Jesus.
Today’s Word from the Lord introduces us to the newness of the new life that Jesus Christ brings. The wedding miracle at Cana, occurring seven days after John the Baptist’s proclamation, signifies the beginning of a new creation. The wedding setting symbolizes the new covenant, where water gives way to new wine, and Jesus emerges as the Bridegroom ushering in a new humanity alongside Mary, the new Eve.
The profound novelty of Jesus’s ministry lies in the outpouring of His Spirit, manifested through various charisms within the community for the common good. This abundance of charisms reflects the joyful fruitfulness of the Spirit in the Church.
Charisma is a divinely bestowed gift, meant to be shared selflessly within the community, as emphasized by Pope Francis. Recognizing and nurturing these gifts within the community is essential, as they are a testament to God’s love for all His children.
The confession that Jesus is Lord, inspired by the Holy Spirit, marks the beginning of true discipleship. It is a call to obedience and a willingness to do whatever He tells you, embodying Christ’s life within us.
Being a Christian is not about rigid rules but about a transformative new life where Christ dwells within us. Following Jesus’s example, living as He lived, and allowing Him to be the Lord of our lives leads to true happiness and fulfillment.
May we strive to imitate Jesus’s faithfulness to God’s will and His acts of kindness towards all. In doing so, we will experience the glory of God and be filled with the presence of the Holy Spirit.
Come, Holy Spirit!
