Experience Opera Under the Stars at the Caracalla Festival in Rome
Rome’s prestigious Teatro dell’Opera di Roma is bringing back its highly-anticipated opera festival at the stunning Baths of Caracalla this summer. The festival will run from 29 June to 7 August and promises a diverse and captivating programme of events set against the backdrop of ancient Roman ruins.
Themed “Between the Sacred and the Human,” the 2025 edition of the Caracalla Festival will feature a mix of opera, musicals, dance, sacred music, and pop concerts.
The festival kicks off on the feast of Rome’s patron saints Peter and Paul with a special event at the Basilica of Maxentius in addition to the Baths of Caracalla. This historic basilica, dating back to the fourth century, will provide a unique and intimate stage for operatic productions for the first time.
The 2025 programme includes four new productions: Handel’s Resurrection (Basilica of Maxentius), Verdi’s La Traviata (Baths of Caracalla), Mozart’s Don Giovanni (Basilica of Maxentius), and Bernstein’s West Side Story (Baths of Caracalla), directed by talented artists.
The festival will also feature captivating dance performances by the Teatro dell’Opera’s Ballet Corps, including Bolero and Le Sacre du printemps. Not to be missed is the traditional performance by Roberto Bolle and Friends.
Music enthusiasts can look forward to a series of pop concerts starting on 3 June, featuring artists like Antonello Venditti, Alessandra Amoroso, Fiorella Mannoia, and Giovanni Allevi.
The festival culminates with a mesmerizing performance of La Pasión según San Marcos by composer Osvaldo Golijov. Tickets for the Caracalla Festival go on sale from 1 February.
