Exploring the importance of protecting children
Dear readers, good day!
In our previous discussion, we delved into the topic of children, and today we continue to shed light on this crucial subject. Last time, we highlighted how Jesus emphasized the significance of safeguarding, embracing, and loving the little ones in his teachings.
Unfortunately, even in today’s world, millions of minors are subjected to labor despite being too young to bear the responsibilities of adulthood. Many of these children are exposed to hazardous work conditions, while others fall prey to trafficking for exploitative purposes such as prostitution, pornography, and forced marriages. This reality is indeed a bitter pill to swallow. Regrettably, in our societies, children continue to suffer abuse and mistreatment in various forms. Any form of child abuse is not only despicable but also a criminal act that violates God’s commandments. No child should ever endure such atrocities. It is imperative to awaken our consciences, extend genuine solidarity to abused children and youth, and collaborate to create safe environments that foster their well-being.
I recall a poignant example from a Latin American country where children are exploited in harvesting a special fruit called arándano. The tender hands of these children are forced into labor, robbing them of their childhood.
The prevalence of poverty, lack of social support systems for families, and increasing marginalization, coupled with unemployment and job insecurity, disproportionately burden the young generation. In metropolitan areas grappling with social inequality and moral decline, children are drawn into drug dealing and other illicit activities. The tragic fate of these children, who often become sacrificial victims or perpetrators of violence, goes unnoticed far too often.
Reflecting on a heartbreaking case in my homeland, where a boy named Loan has been abducted for organ trafficking, serves as a stark reminder of the atrocities children face globally. It is crucial to acknowledge and address the social injustices that perpetuate divergent destinies for children based on their socioeconomic backgrounds.
Jesus’ profound love for children underscores the need to listen to the voiceless and marginalized. Combatting exploitation, especially of children, is pivotal in shaping a more equitable society. Several countries have enshrined children’s rights in legislation, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding their well-being.
So, what can we do? Firstly, we must refrain from being complicit in child labor by conscientiously choosing products that are not tainted by exploitation. Individual actions, when combined, can bring about significant change. Institutions, including religious and corporate entities, play a crucial role in advocating against child labor and investing in ethical practices. Journalists, too, have a responsibility to raise awareness and demand accountability in addressing child exploitation.
Let us heed the call to protect the vulnerable, following Jesus’ words, “Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me” (Mt 25:40). Inspired by the compassionate legacy of Saint Teresa of Calcutta, let us strive to be advocates for the voiceless and marginalized children, ensuring that their happiness contributes to the peace of all.
Welcome to our blog, where we strive to spread awareness and compassion for those in need, especially children. As Mother Teresa once said, let us give voice to the children:
“I ask for a safe place where I can play. I ask for a smile from someone who knows how to love. I ask for the right to be a child, to be the hope of a better world. I ask to be able to grow as a person. Can I count on you?” (Saint Teresa of Calcutta)
Thank you for considering these heartfelt words.
Special greetings:
To all our English-speaking pilgrims and visitors, especially those from South Korea and the United States, welcome to our blog. May the present Jubilee of Hope bring grace and spiritual renewal to you and your families, and may you find joy and peace in the Lord Jesus!
Summary of the Holy Father’s words:
Dear brothers and sisters, today we reflect on the welfare of children. Jesus, who loves everyone as a child of God, has a special care for the smallest among us. It is our moral duty to address the needs of these little ones. Many children today suffer from poverty, exploitation, abuse, and other forms of harm. As individuals and as a society, we are called to take concrete actions to protect and support them. We can follow the example of Mother Teresa, who dedicated her life to helping children grow in safety and love, nurturing them to become the hope of a better future. Will you join us in this important mission?
