From dawn tomorrow, Wednesday, January 15, the new bus terminal in Piazza dei Cinquecento will be operational, and at the same time, the current temporary terminal will be deactivated. Today, the square in front of Termini Station was inaugurated, with the works, as stated by the site manager Paolo Nardocci, being 91% complete.
The urban redevelopment project in the area of the main Roman railway station, carried out by Anas for the Jubilee 2025, includes three construction sites: the road network on Via Marsala and Via Giolitti, the area of Piazza della Repubblica, with the new square and pedestrian walkway already inaugurated in December, and the new bus terminal in front of Termini, inaugurated today.
Piazza dei Cinquecento completed ahead of schedule
The works are almost complete, said director Nardocci, with the remaining areas to be finished being the arboretum (the area with trees that should complete the square) and the current temporary terminus of Atac buses.
The overall project was initially divided into two lots, but thanks to a 540-day construction site, the works progressed ahead of schedule. The second lot will be completed in different phases, some completed in the coming weeks, and the construction site will be completed by 2025, sooner than expected.
The works in Piazza dei Cinquecento consist of a total of 80,000 square meters of completely redeveloped surface with high-quality materials. 30,000 square meters of marble and stone, 20,000 square meters of cobblestones, 10,000 square meters of architectural concrete, 10,000 square meters of new garden areas and flower beds, and 6,000 square meters of asphalt have been laid.
Salvini boycotts today’s inauguration
Present at today’s inauguration were Ferrovie’s CEO, Antonio Donnarumma, Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano, and the Mayor of Rome and extraordinary commissioner for the Jubilee, Roberto Gualtieri.
However, the Minister of Transport and Deputy Prime Minister, Matteo Salvini, was notably absent, following another challenging day yesterday with delays and disruptions on the Milan-Naples high-speed rail line.
“Why is Minister Salvini absent this morning? What I can say is that the Ministry of Infrastructure in all its branches has provided and is providing a decisive contribution to the completion of the Jubilee works, and the Government, albeit improperly, is represented by me,” said Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano.
Mayor Gualtieri: “Piazza dei Cinquecento, a gigantic intervention”
“I really want to thank the many people who contributed to this new phase of work for the Jubilee. From tonight, all bus terminuses will be moved to the new terminal A gigantic intervention. Everything has been done while maintaining the usability of the station and bus terminuses.
