The Vatican Secretary for Relations with States recently expressed Pope Francis’ solidarity with the Congolese people in the face of ongoing natural disasters. This show of support comes at a crucial time when the effects of these disasters are still being felt.
Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations, has been on a special visit to the Republic of the Congo. His visit marks the beginning of the Joint Commission for the implementation of the Framework Agreement, signed in 2017 and in effect since 2019. This agreement recognizes the legal status of the Church in the Congo-Brazzaville and its institutions, aimed at safeguarding their independence and autonomy.
During his visit, Archbishop Gallagher celebrated Mass at the Cathedral Square dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus for the Jubilee of Ecclesial Movements. The event was attended by prominent figures such as Archbishop Bienvenu Manamika of Brazzaville and the Papal Nuncio, Archbishop Javier Herrera Corona, among others.
Following the Mass, Archbishop Gallagher met with the Bishops’ Conference in the Republic of Congo and had discussions with the Minister of International Cooperation and the Promotion of Public-Private Partnerships.
In his homily, Archbishop Gallagher conveyed Pope Francis’ greetings and blessings to the Congolese people, assuring them of the Pope’s love and concern for their well-being. He acknowledged the challenges the Congolese people have faced, especially with last year’s heavy rainfall and flooding, which left many in need of humanitarian assistance.
Archbishop Gallagher also expressed gratitude on behalf of Pope Francis for the Congolese people’s dedication to the Gospel and their efforts in building a more just and fraternal society. He highlighted the exemplary life of Cardinal Emile Biayenda, a Congolese martyr who was known for his unwavering faith and commitment to justice.
As the Jubilee Year unfolds, Archbishop Gallagher emphasized the importance of evangelization and issued a challenge to young people to hold onto hope for a brighter future. He echoed Pope Francis’ message, urging them not to lose hope in the face of adversity.
