Embark on a Spiritual Journey on the Amerigo Vespucci
Imagine setting sail on a historic vessel, the Amerigo Vespucci, designated as a “Jubilee church” for the year 2025 by the Archbishop of the Italian Forces. This three-masted sailing ship, dating back to 1931, is not just a training ship for the Italian Armed Forces but also a cultural ambassador for Italy, touring the world and stopping in various cities across five continents.
During the recent inauguration of the Jubilee Year in the Italian Military Ordinariate, Archbishop Santo Marcianò announced the Amerigo Vespucci as a sacred pilgrimage site, where pilgrims can obtain the Plenary Indulgence during the Holy Year.
A Spiritual Pilgrimage at Sea
Until December 28, the Amerigo Vespucci will continue its world tour, offering pilgrims the opportunity for sacred pilgrimages and pious visits as part of its mission at sea. A pilgrimage to a designated church or shrine is one of the conditions for faithful to gain a Plenary Indulgence during the Jubilee Year, along with other acts of devotion and charity.
Archbishop Marcianò highlighted the significance of establishing Jubilee sites within the military community, expressing hope for spiritual benefits and signs of God’s grace. He emphasized the role of Catholic chaplains onboard the Amerigo Vespucci in accompanying the spiritual journey of the crew, especially during this Jubilee of Hope.
Forgiveness, Peace, and Fraternity
In his homily at the inauguration Mass, Archbishop Marcianò spoke about forgiveness as a fundamental step towards building a culture of peace. He reflected on the importance of pilgrimage in the lives of military personnel, marking their journey of faith and service to humanity.
As the Jubilee unfolds, Archbishop Marcianò encouraged the military community to grow in communion with God and fraternity, serving the defense of human life, justice, and peace. The Italian Military Ordinariate has designated several Jubilee sites, including churches, hospitals, and international peacekeeping missions, fostering a spirit of unity and devotion.
Join the Jubilee of the Armed Forces and Police
Looking ahead, the Italian Military Ordinariate is gearing up for the Jubilee of the Armed Forces and Police in February, bringing together military personnel from around the world in Rome. The event will feature a series of activities, including a welcome event, a pilgrimage to St. Peter’s Basilica, and a Mass presided over by Pope Francis, culminating in a celebration of faith and service.
As we embark on this spiritual journey aboard the Amerigo Vespucci and beyond, let us seek forgiveness, peace, and fraternity, embracing the Jubilee as a time of renewal and grace for all.
