A man of prayer, Father Giovanni Merlini (1795-1873) from Spoleto to Rome, the third General Moderator of the Missionaries of the Most Precious Blood, was beatified on January 12th. Cardinal Marcello Semeraro led the ceremony at the Papal Basilica of St. John Lateran. Pope Francis also mentioned him during the Angelus.
A Man of Prayer
In his homily, Cardinal Semeraro emphasized Merlini’s deep devotion to prayer, which was recognized by all who knew him. He was truly a man of prayer, with his prayer life often turning into contemplation. Witnesses attested to this, describing his ecstatic state during prayer, which left them in awe. Merlini’s face was said to glow with an extraordinary beauty.
The Virtue of Prudence
Merlini was not only a man of prayer but also a fervent missionary, especially in preaching, a skill admired by Saint Gaspar. He exemplified excellent leadership skills, guided by the virtue of prudence. Cardinal Semeraro highlighted the importance of prudence in leadership, citing Merlini’s exceptional ability to make wise decisions with charity, even in difficult situations.
Uniting Contemplation and Action
Cardinal Semeraro reminded the faithful of the importance of balancing contemplative and active aspects of spiritual life, as emphasized by Pope Francis. These dimensions are not contradictory but complementary, leading to a more fulfilling spiritual life. Merlini’s ability to foster genuine friendships with everyone was also highlighted during the beatification ceremony, a quality that Cardinal Semeraro prayed would be bestowed upon all, especially during the Jubilee Year.
