Jordan’s remarkable history of welcoming refugees includes Iraqi citizens seeking refuge from their homeland. While some have returned, many have made Jordan their new home. For those forced to leave Iraq, the opportunity to work at a Church-operated restaurant in Jordan has been a source of pride and joy, especially through their cheese-making expertise.
The Habibi Association, founded by Father Mario Cornioli, has provided training to Iraqi refugees, turning them into skilled chefs. Another project by Habibi empowers financially vulnerable housewives in Southern Jordan, where they produce cheese in the village of Adir.
The process of cheese-making is not only a preservation technique but also an art form that transforms milk into various flavors and textures. Six dedicated women, led by supervisor Iklas Bqa’een, pour their passion into producing ricotta and pecorino cheese, a task that brings them immense satisfaction.
As the cheese ages in the facility, the women dream of expanding their impact. The Habibi project not only supports the women but also provides opportunities for Iraqi refugee women to learn sewing and design skills, enabling them to create and sell their masterpieces.
Witnessing the final product at the Church-run restaurant in Amman, the experience is unforgettable. The trained Iraqi refugees operate the restaurant, showcasing their culinary talents and offering guests a taste of their hard work.
Through collaborative projects like these, vulnerable women and refugees find meaningful employment opportunities, paving the way for a brighter future. While the journey may be challenging, the success stories of those who have moved on to other countries reflect the impact of professional training and support.
