Excitement and tension grip Venezuela as the country prepares for the inauguration of its new president on Friday, Jan. 10. The aftermath of the 2024 election has left the nation divided, with conflicting claims of victory.
While the National Electoral Council declared incumbent President Nicholas Maduro as the winner, the lack of transparent vote tallies has fueled controversy. Opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia insists on his landslide victory, backed by what he claims to be 80% of the vote tallies.
Internationally, several countries have already recognized González as the rightful president elected by the Venezuelan people.
Against this backdrop of political turmoil, Archbishop Raúl Biord of Caracas emphasized the importance of upholding human and citizen rights during the inauguration of the 2025 Jubilee Year in Caracas.
