Pope Francis addressed the issue of exploitation and violence against children during his first general audience of the year, calling on Christians worldwide to not ignore the suffering of children.
Highlighting the issue of child labor, the Holy Father expressed sorrow over the fact that many children are forced to work and are deprived of the ability to smile, dream, and develop their talents.
He emphasized that children around the world are being exploited by an economy that disregards human life, consuming the hope and love that should be nurtured instead.
Addressing an audience of international pilgrims at the Paul VI Hall in Vatican City, the pope urged society, especially Christians who identify as children of God, to not overlook the suffering of vulnerable children.
He stated that Christians cannot stand by while children are deprived of love, protection, and their childhood, becoming victims of exploitation and marginalization.
