Unveiling the Controversial Fascist Salutes at Rome Event
Amidst the commemoration of the 47th anniversary of the tragic killing of three neo-fascist militants, Rome witnessed a disturbing sight as hundreds of men performed the fascist salute during an annual event in the Italian capital.
The Acca Larentia event is held every year to honor the 1978 killings of three members of the youth wing of the neo-fascist Movimento Sociale Italiano (MSI), a precursor to the right-wing Fratelli d’Italia party currently led by Italy’s prime minister Giorgia Meloni.
Police in Rome have launched an investigation into the incident, as video footage of the event, attended by approximately 1,300 people, is being scrutinized to identify those engaged in the prohibited straight-armed salute, which is a criminal offense in Italy.
In addition to the salutes, participants were heard shouting “Present!” in response to the call “For all fallen comrades!”, a rallying cry associated with the Italian far-right.
Political Right’s Presence
Earlier in the day, another commemorative event took place at Acca Larentia, attended by the vice president of the lower house and Fratelli d’Italia deputy Fabio Rampelli, as well as the right-wing governor of the Lazio region, Francesco Rocca.
Rocca emphasized the importance of remembering the Acca Larentia massacre as a civic duty, stressing the need for historical pacification to prevent such incidents from reoccurring.
Controversy Erupts
During the ceremony, a protester denounced the event, highlighting the importance of upholding the Italian Constitution and resisting any glorification of Italy’s fascist past, before being escorted away by police.
The incident sparked controversy, with the centre-left Partito Democratico (PD) condemning the rally and calling for swift identification of those responsible for the fascist salutes.
Remembering the Tragedy
On 7 January 1978, Franco Bigonzetti and Francesco Ciavatta, aged 18 and 19, were fatally shot outside the MSI headquarters in Rome’s Tuscolano suburb. The killings, allegedly carried out by far-left militants, remain unsolved till date.
The Acca Larentia massacre serves as a stark reminder of the lingering tensions associated with Italy’s political history, urging a collective effort towards reconciliation and peace.
